On account of a quasi-accidental twinst of fate, most of greater New Orleans is located below sea level. This fact has shaped our fine city’s history in many notable ways – such as our almost complete lack of basements and cellars. So where does one keep their water meters, you ask? In the street! And what do we cover them up with? Well, funny story – Until recently our iconic water meter covers. The thing is, unlike most things in New Orleans, they worked. They worked really well. People found them… irresistable. This lead to a great many open holes in the street. Now they are in the process of replacing them with something far more boring. Soon, our noble friend the water meter cover will be all but extinct. Like the dodo bird or chivalry. Take one home with you. Preserve some New Orleans history. Dammit, Man – preserve your wine!
